Euro 2024: Jude Bellingham handed one match ban; cleared to play against Switzerland in quarter finals
The midfielder has been pivotal in England’s Euro 2024 campaign so far.
England narrowly defeated Slovakia in their round of 16 fixture on Sunday, to make it to the quarter-final of the European Champion 2024. The Three Lions were trailing for the majority of the game after conceding a goal in 25 minutes, before Real Madrid starboy Jude Bellingham came to England’s rescue in the 5th minute of added time. Bellingham scored a sensational overhead kick to send the game to extra time.
England scored at the very onset of extra time, courtesy of Harry Kane, and the slender lead proved enough to take them to the next round.
Despite the win, there was a lot of speculation and argument regarding Jude Bellingham’s celebration after his 95th minute winner, wherein the 21-year-old motioned to grab his crotch in front of the Slovakia bench.
UEFA soon opened an investigation on the matter, and there were a lot of rumours regarding the player’s suspension for the quarter-final against Switzerland, for onfield misconduct.
On Friday, five days after the incident, and just a day prior to England’s all important quarter final, the Three Lions received a verdict regarding the matter.
So without any further ado, let us take a look at what UEFA has ruled on the matter.
UEFA’s verdict for Jude Bellingham
England midfielder Jude Bellingham has been fined €30,000 (around 27 lakh INR) by UEFA for “breaching the basic rules of decent conduct” by monitoring to grab his crotch in front of the Slovakia bench.
The 21-year-old has also been warned with a one-game ban, that will come into effect if he repeats the offensive gesture at any point in the next year.
The news brings great relief and jubilation to all English supporters who were speculating that the player could be suspended for the quarter-final.
Despite England’s poor performances in the Euro this year, Jude Bellingham has stepped up for the Three Lions at crucial moments, the biggest of which was the late equaliser. It goes without saying that the Real Madrid star will be a key cog for England this Saturday, and will play a huge role in determining their Euro campaign.
