Both teams will look to win this game with England threat looming.

The opening Group C match at Euro 2024 between Slovenia and Denmark could be crucial in deciding which team advances from this tough group.

While England are expected to top the group, the other three nations will be fighting for that potentially vital second place. Here are three key matchups that could determine the outcome in Stuttgart:

Three key battles that may decide Slovenia vs Denmark Euro 2024 clash

3. Benjamin Sesko vs Andreas Christensen

The main matchup features young Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko going up against experienced Danish defender Andreas Christensen. At just 21 years old, Sesko had a breakout season with RB Leipzig, scoring 14 goals in the Bundesliga. The tall 6’5″ forward also scored five goals in Euro 2024 qualifying. Christensen will need to be at his best to stop Sesko’s physical presence and goal threat.

The 28-year-old Danish centre-back has over 65 caps for his country and is in his prime after a solid year at Barcelona. His reading of the game and positioning will be crucial in keeping Sesko quiet. Whoever wins this key striker vs defender battle could swing the match in their team’s favour.

2. Tomi Horvat vs Christian Eriksen

In midfield, Slovenia’s Tomi Horvat will have the daunting task of keeping Christian Eriksen quiet. Horvat will look to break up play and shield his back four.

Eriksen is Denmark’s creative hub and most talented player. The Manchester United man has the vision and passing range to unlock any defence. Horvat must stay disciplined positionally and make smart tactical fouls when needed to disrupt Eriksen’s influence. It’s an enormous challenge for the Slovenian against such a world-class opponent.

1. Jan Oblak vs Kasper Schmeichel

Two of the best goalkeepers at the tournament will be in goal – Slovenia’s Jan Oblak and Denmark‘s Kasper Schmeichel. Oblak has been elite for years at Atletico Madrid, while Schmeichel starred for Leicester City in their surprise 2016 Premier League title win.

Both are excellent shot-stoppers capable of making game-changing saves. However, they will also need to organize their defences effectively against dangerous attackers. With goals potentially hard to come by, one momentary lapse from either goalkeeper could prove decisive in a tight, tense game. Their duel within the larger contest could make for compelling viewing.
