Euro 2024: What is Cristiano Ronaldo's record against Slovenia?
Ronaldo has faced Slovenia once in his career.
Tournament favorites Portugal endured mixed fortunes in the Euro 2024 group stage, topping a relatively easy-looking Group F despite concerning performances they aim to rectify heading into the crucial knockout rounds.
Portugal’s opening game was a thrilling 2-1 comeback win against a tricky Czechia, courtesy of an injury-time winner by super-sub Chico Conceicao. This close contest was followed by a dominant 3-0 win against Turkey.
Roberto Martinez’s side was on the verge of a perfect group stage as they faced debutant Georgia in the final matchday. However, things took a turn for the worse when the newbies stunned the Seleção das Quinas with an exceptional 2-0 win, causing one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history.
Despite being placed on the tougher side of the draw, the 2016 Euro champions are set to face Slovenia at the Frankfurt Arena in the round of 16. Slovenia have enjoyed an unbeatable run in the tournament so far, finishing third in a challenging Group C behind England and Denmark with three draws.
Captain Cristiano Ronaldo has not had the best of campaigns, registering just a single assist in three games with no goals. Ronaldo has faced widespread criticism for his underwhelming performances, having the most attempts at goal (12) in the tournament without success.
The Portuguese superstar has enjoyed a stellar international career with 130 goals in 210 caps for his country, holding the record for the most international goals scored by a male player in football history. However, Ronaldo does not have the best record against his round of 16 opponents, Slovenia.
Cristiano Ronaldo has faced Slovenia only once in his entire career, earlier this year in an international friendly match in the buildup to Euro 2024. Portugal suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Slovenia at the Stozice Stadium, with Ronaldo failing to score.
Despite the loss in their previous meeting, Portugal remain firm favorites to beat Slovenia in their round of 16 fixture and progress to the quarterfinal stage. Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to put his poor past performances behind him and deliver a world-class display against the Reprezentanca to guide the Seleção das Quinas to victory.
