The mercurial French forward has endured a poor Euro 2024 so far.

Didier Deschamps and his team took revenge on their demons on Friday in Hamburg, without their captain and star, Kylian Mbappe, who was replaced at the halfway point of extra time due to a close-range header impacting his freshly broken nose. With poise and confidence, France defeated Portugal 5-3 on penalties, ending the nightmares of the past.

This was different from Qatar, where Deschamps said that he didn’t force the players to practise spot kicks and that he believed it was a lottery regardless.

France worked on it prior to both their round of 16 match against Belgium and their match against Portugal in order to be ready for this time.

In Hamburg, there were two liabilities—one on each side of the pitch. Though Kylian Mbappé continues to be frustrating in a different way, the persistence of Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal’s initial squad has been a frequent subject of controversy. The same has appeared with Mbappe who has been poor during the Euro 2024 competition.

But now he will have to step up his game if he wants to lead France to the final against a dominant Spain. He has scored only once in the competition which came via Penalty and since then Mbappe has failed to illustrate his threat against the opposition. The game against Spain will present another chance for the 25-year-old to show his calibre.

The goal of France’s aggressive set-up is to conceal Mbappé’s flaws and highlight his talents when the ball is in possession. Usually, this kind of decision would be easily defended, after all, he is without a doubt one of the world’s finest players. So building your system around him makes sense. We haven’t yet seen the ‘real’ Mbappe in Germany.

The captain of France is hardly the same person. Partially it makes sense. Mbappe broke his nose in the first game match against Austria. He now appears afraid to engage in duels and is either intentionally or unintentionally avoiding them.

But now France are in the semi-final and the Real Madrid star will have to show that he is rated as one of the best players in football to help his side get past one of the strongest sides in the tournament.
