Due to a thunderstorm, the Germany and Denmark game was suspended

Due to “adverse weather circumstances,” Germany’s Euro 2024 Round of 16 match versus Denmark was postponed as lightning and torrential rain caused chaos in Dortmund. Just before halftime, Michael Oliver, the referee, led both sets of players off the pitch to end the still-goalless game.

Michael Oliver, an English referee, allowed play to continue for five minutes before stopping it. Players from Germany and Denmark argued that it was unsafe to continue. The English official then herded the players off the pitch and into their dressing rooms with a whistle blow.

“Due to adverse weather conditions the match has been suspended. Further information will follow shortly,” read an announcement on the stadium screens.

When lightning struck above the stadium in the 36th minute, referee Anthony Taylor motioned for the game to halt. The stadium then announced that the match had been suspended.

In sharp contrast to the bright summer evening before, hail was even pouring on the pitch during the break.

As the hurricane drove buckets of rain onto seating and water poured over the roof, spectators in the front seats of the stadium’s renowned South Stand moved beneath cover. Some German admirers chanted, “Oh, how beautiful it is.”

Now it remains to be seen if the game will continue. Germany were a better side for a large part of the minutes before the Danes took control of the game and for the last 10 minutes, they appeared to a threat to Germany’s defence Eriksen was even came close to scoring a goal but Rudiger made an excellent block.

After that, there was a heavy thunderstorm which saw the referee halt the game and force the players to wait for some time but it continued and both the nations headed to their respective changing rooms.

On July 5, the winner advances to play either Spain or Georgia in the quarterfinals.
