Spain are the most successful side in the championship history.

The European continental competition where the best nations across the continent compete to win the ultimate coveted trophy. It is the second-most watched football tournament worldwide, following the FIFA World Cup.

The Euro 2024 saw an incredible rise in viewership from India as well. We spoke to Vaayu Saxena from MyBettingSites India, who commented, “We saw an unexpected surge of traffic during the Euros, which clearly indicates that more and more Indians also want to watch and bet on the event.”

Spain won the latest edition to become the most successful side in history, leaving Germany behind, who are on three titles.

With its first-ever edition being hosted by France in 1960, some prominent teams such as England, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy were not a part of the maiden event. Unlike the 24-team group stage format now, the inaugural European Championship was a small competition with just four teams qualifying for the final tournament: France, Soviet Union, Yugoslavia & Czechoslovakia. Ultimately, the Soviet Union was crowned the champions after defeating Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final.

Over its 16 iterations, both Germany and Spain were the joint most successful nations in the competition’s history, with an incredible three titles each under their belt. But finally, Spain moved further, securing their fourth.

Die Mannschaft’s most recent triumph came in 1996, when they defeated the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia) 2-1 in the final via the golden goal rule. Whereas in the case of La Roja, they claimed their last title in 2012 after dismantling Italy 4-0 in the final.

With Spain successfully making it to the final four of Euro 2024, they will hope to create history by potentially claiming their fourth trophy in the tournament.

After the leaders follow Italy and France, which have won an impressive two Euro titles in their history. Gli Azzurri are the current defending champions of the competition after winning Euro 2020. However, they suffered a shock round of 16 exit at the hands of Switzerland in Euro 2024.

On the other hand, Le Bleus’ most recent success in the tournament came during the 2000 European Championships, when they beat Italy 2-1 in the final through the golden goal rule. With France successfully making it to the final four of Euro 2024, they will hope to bring home their third title in this tournament.

On the other end of the spectrum lie England and Belgium, who have never clinched the continental trophy in their history. However, having made it to the semifinals of Euro 2024, the Three Lions will look to end their dreaded trophy drought this summer.

In terms of individual achievements, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for the most European Championship goals with 14. Along with this, Ronaldo also holds the record for the most appearances in the Euros, with 30 matches played.

The Euro 2024 has come to a close. Four teams that remained in the battle for the trophy at the semifinals, Spain vs. France & Netherlands vs. England, finally know the winner. Spain defeated England 2-1 to return after much awaited wait as Euro champions.

This summer, the tournament in Germany has proven to be an enthralling watch for worldwide football fans owing to its high-octane drama, underdog stories, and unbelievable moments.
