48 nations will be competing for the trophy.
In an effort to increase accessibility for spectators with impairments, FIFA has announced that the World Cup 2026 will be the first to provide sign language interpretation broadcasts for each match.
FIFA to broadcast World Cup 2026 matches with sign language

The football governing body said in a statement posted on its website on Friday that the goal of the effort is to guarantee that all fans, whether at stadiums or watching from a distance, can thoroughly enjoy the competition.
“FIFA is dedicated to making sure that all fans, including those with disabilities and their families and friends, have an excellent experience at this year’s FIFA World Cup,” the organisation said.
The enhanced accessibility package expands upon features like sensory packs and audio-descriptive commentary services that were first implemented during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
FIFA will also incorporate more support aids, such as tactile boards and improved sensory assistance features, for the FIFA World Cup 2026 competition.
The implementation of live sign language interpretation for every game is a big highlight. According to FIFA, the service is intended to capture the game’s overall mood, going beyond simple translation.
“Sign language commentary goes beyond standard interpretation. It provides an immersive experience for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing fans by translating the full energy of the game,” the statement added.
FIFA claims that translators will provide emotional and environmental aspects, such as audience reactions, referee whistles, and shifts in stadium ambience, in addition to match actions.
Additionally, the organisation described intentions for regional sign language coverage. American Sign Language (ASL) will be used for matches in the US and Canada, and Mexican Sign Language (LSM) will be used for matches in Mexico.
The effort, according to FIFA, is a reflection of the organisation’s long-standing dedication to promoting inclusion in football and making the World Cup accessible to a larger global audience.
Why will sign language also be used in the FIFA World Cup 2026?
