The largest FIFA World Cup ever started with 48 teams. It will only become smaller by the day, as nations learn their fate in the competition.
This summer’s expanded FIFA World Cup is approaching the midway mark of its 48-team group stage schedule. After two matches, the three 2026 World Cup host countries are confident in their abilities. As they all have now won at least a game.
With their loss to Brazil, Haiti became the first team officially eliminated from the 2026 World Cup. They mathematically can’t advance beyond the group stage. This is even though they have a game in hand.
The next team to go out are Turkey. Matías Galarza’s 64-second fastest World Cup 2026 goal sends them home.
In the new FIFA World Cup format, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, advance to the Round of 32, which begins on June 28.
There is plenty of room for mistakes in this competition, which will be contested at 16 locations across North America, given that previously only half of the 32 nations advanced beyond the group stage.
In this World Cup, we will witness the round of 32 following the expansion of the competition from 32 nations to 48 countries this time.
The 2026 World Cup final is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
