The tournament can be impacted by rising temperatures.
A total of 48 teams are ready to compete on the biggest stage of football. FIFA World Cup 2026 will have 104 matches, which will be played across the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
Slowly but steadily, nations are confirming the players that will represent their squads in FIFA’s flagship tournament. We are going to witness some experienced stars and a lot of young guns who will be looking to help their teams by delivering top performances.
A few stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and others are going to play on the biggest stage for the final time. The Argentine great won the 2022 edition of the mega competition. Meanwhile, the Portuguese talisman has a final chance to win the mega prize.
During the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, we saw a constant problem due to hot weather conditions on the field. The upcoming edition of the FIFA World Cup can face similar issues.
Why are players and fans at risk during the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Fans who are all set to attend FIFA’s flagship tournament should also be ready to support their teams under increasing temperatures. Some of the fixtures at the mega competition are going to take place under heat conditions, which can become a problem for both the audience and the performers on the field.
As per the analysis by World Weather Attribution (WWA), players will get exhausted or dehydrated faster. Matches will surely need a cooling break, or a schedule change can also be better. Supporters sitting under the sun for longer periods can also face health risks.
“A 30-degree-Celsius day in dry, breezy conditions is very different from a 30-degree-C day with high humidity, strong sun and little wind,” said Chris Mullington, a senior lecturer at Imperial College London. Players are elite athletes and acclimatised to such conditions, Mullington mentioned further.
The climate scientists have asked the officials in all three host countries to invest in hydration stations. A better cooling infrastructure will surely help in avoiding the injuries related to excessive heat. FIFPRO suggests that after the safety threshold, there should be mandatory cooling interventions when Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) exceeds 26°C.
