Messi maintains his spot as the 2026 World Cup top scorer.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé dominated the spotlight on Matchday 12 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina and France, last year’s finalists, won their respective matches. Here we retell what transpired over the four matches.
Lionel Messi botched a penalty, a golden opportunity. Nothing to worry about as he scored twice and eclipsed the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring record (both Marta’s and Miroslav Klose’s). Reigning champions Argentina defeated Austria 2-0.
France secured their position in the World Cup knockout round with a 3-0 victory over Iraq. Norway advanced to the World Cup knockout round after defeating Senegal 3-2.
Algeria’s late turnaround kept their chances in Group J alive, tying Austria on three points while knocking out Jordan.
