The Dutch are out of the World Cup.
Morocco advanced to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday night after defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw.
Ismael Saibari scored the game-winning penalty, advancing last year’s semifinalists and eliminating Ronald Koeman and the Dutch from the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Cody Gakpo netted in the 72nd minute for the Dutch. Following the goal, which was assisted by Crysencio Summerville, the Dutch bench rushed onto the pitch to embrace the 27-year-old Gakpo, who burst into tears.
Morocco’s Issa Diop equalised in the 91st minute, heading home a long cross from Chemsdine Talbi. Neither team had a good goal chance throughout the 30 minutes of extra time at Estadio BBVA.
It was the second match of the round of 32 that ended in a shootout. Paraguay defeated Germany on penalties earlier Monday, advancing to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
