He allegedly gave his €180,300 World Cup bonus to five police officers who guarded the French team during the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Their commander was given €60,300, while each of the four officers received €30,000.

The French financial authority Tracfin reported the transfers, which led to an internal police inquiry and increased scrutiny over the legality of the transaction. This is despite the Real Madrid forward’s insistence that the contributions were legitimate and made out of gratitude.

Despite the apparent generosity behind Kylian Mbappe’s offer, the situation raises legal questions about private payments to public servants. According to reports, a written letter from Mbappe himself supported the gifts, which came from an account in Monaco.

The development focuses on Mbappe’s well-known practice of giving his money from playing for the national team to organizations or people he feels should be honoured. He promised to donate his full tournament bonus as a thank you after France finished as runners-up in the 2022 World Cup.

This includes the security staff that guarded the team in Qatar, as well as charitable organisations like Premiers de Cordee.
