Defenders can now earn points in the new FPL season.

There is good news for the underappreciated defensive players on the field as the FPL has now come up with new major changes.

The Fantasy Premier League has changed its point system for 2025–2026 and included defensive contributions, alongside double chips for all managers.

Players who accumulate tackles, blocks, interceptions, and recoveries will now be valuable in the game, even if they never approach the opposing team’s box.

It could significantly affect your team selection this season and is a significant step toward recognising defensive influence.

What’s different in 2025-26 FPL?

Players can now receive additional FPL points for crucial defensive efforts starting in Gameweek 1. This is how it works:

If a defender records ten clearances, blocks, interceptions, or tackles (CBIT) in a single game, they receive two points.

With a somewhat higher threshold of 12 defensive actions, midfielders and forwards must perform ball recoveries, which include regaining possession and initiating a counterattack.

The purpose of this rule is to highlight defensive players, particularly centre-backs and defensive midfielders, who were frequently overlooked in the Premier League because of their lack of offensive danger.

How will scoring work?

Similar to goalkeeper save points, the system operates as follows:

Defenders who score ten CBIT in a match receive two points. For a total of 12 defensive contributions, including CBIT plus recoveries (CBIRT), midfielders and forwards receive 2 points.

Crucially, regardless of the number of activities logged, this is limited to two points every match. Therefore, a fantastic performance with 20 tackles and blocks still earns the same bonus as one with 10, but it could also count toward bonus points.

  • New points added for defensive actions.
  • 10 CBIT = 2 points (defenders); 12 CBIRT = 2 points (mids/forwards).
  • Midfielders are now rewarded for pressing and recoveries.
  • Budget picks in defensive positions could become gold.

What’s new for FPL managers?

In the 2025–2026 season, fantasy managers will have two sets of chips to play with.

Throughout the campaign, you will receive eight chips total—one for each of the following: Bench Boost, Free Hit, Triple Captain, and Wildcard. This season, there won’t be an Assistant Manager chip in Fantasy.

This first set of chips must be used before the Gameweek 19 deadline, same as the first Wildcard has been used in former seasons. They won’t be carried over into 2025–2026’s second half.

It is obvious that this new chip set gives fantasy a more strategic component.
