Neighbours to meet for the 78th time in the UEFA Nations League this October.

France and Belgium are no strangers to each other. They are literally neighbours, speaking geographically. Football also holds a special place in their regular exchanges.

Their first meeting dates back to 1904. A friendly football match was organised in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to kick-start their football meetings. The first match was a thrilling affair as it ended 3-3 in the capital city. Fast forward to the present day, we have seen them face each other over 75 times, taking friendlies into consideration.

We have seen both nations collide in the Euros as well. Their first ever meeting in the continental competition dates back to 1968 (Euro ’68). Guess who were the winner? The Red Devils defeated Les Bleus 2-1 on the night. However, the return fixture of the group stages saw them draw 1-1. Eventually, the French topped that Euro group and progressed to the knockouts.

Their latest Euro meeting happened this July when the two neighbours faced off each other in Germany in Euro 2024. Les Bleus under the leadership of Didier Deschamps emerged victorious by the slightest of margins, 1-0.

However that Euro 2024 game isn’t their most recent meeting overall. We saw them collide in the UEFA Nations League again this year. Once again France kept a clean sheet and pulled out another victory. Although the writing seems to glorify the French, historically speaking, Belgium are the most successful side of the two head-to-head. The latter have defeated the former 30 times, that’s two more wins than France pulled off against them.

Oh, we forgot about the World Cup, did we? Les Bleus hosted the 1938 edition of the World Cup. They met Belgium for the first time in a World Cup game that year. The first World Cup battle ended 3-1 in favour of the 1938 competition hosts.
