This was the second-ever outing between these sides.

For the opening game of Group I at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Les Bleus squared off against the Lions of Teranga at the New York-New Jersey Stadium.

The fixture started off with both sides battling hard for the ball time and time again. The star-studded French side looked weak in almost all of their departments during the first half. The Senegal national football team looked to take advantage of the situation, but were not quite successful.

France are now on top of Group I with their 3-1 win against the Pape Thiaw-led side. This positive start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 is going to be a big advantage for them going forward in the flagship tournament.

Five important things we learned:

1. Slow start for France

The French national football team saw multiple problems during the first half against the Lions of Teranga. Their defence looked a bit open and they also failed to come up with enough chances on goal despite having a star-studded lineup. They need to work it out for the next games, as the journey is going to become only tougher going forward.

2. Senegal regret missed chances

During the first-half, the Senegal national football team came up with a strong fight for the two-time world champions. Although having some big chances in front of them in the first half, the Lions of Teranga failed to turn the tide around. This cost them three points in their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

3. Kylian Mbappe becomes France’s leading goal scorer

The Real Madrid star barely came to notice during the first-half. He came to score a brace in the second-half and helped the France national football team secure three easy points. With this, Kylian Mbappe is now the all-time top goal scorer for Les Bleus, overtaking Olivier Giroud. In 99 games for his national team, Mbappe has scored 58 goals.

4. Attacking depth a strength for Les Blues

Didier Deschamps’ men, who looked weak in the first half, came out on top to secure a 3-1 win at the end of 90 minutes. The French national football team made several mistakes in the first half, but fixed them in the second. Kylian Mbappe scored a brace and Bradly Barcola came in from the bench to score one of the goals. Michael Olise looked strong, Desire Doué was a threat and Ousmane Dembele played his part.

5. Lions of Teranga need to do a lot more to survive

The Pape Thiaw-led side came up with a strong performance in the first half, but fell apart in the second. They failed to convert some important chances into goals and have now faced a defeat in their opening game of the mega competition. With two more group stage games, they need to tighten up their defence. Ibrahim Mbaye came in from the bench to score the only goal for Senegal.
