France are yet to lose or draw a game in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

France, alongside Argentina and Mexico, were one of only three teams to win all of their FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage matches, progressing to the knockout rounds with a perfect record. In the Round of 32, Les Bleus will face Sweden, who finished third in their group and secured qualification as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The encounter is scheduled to take place on June 30 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States. As with every knockout fixture, the winners will advance to the Round of 16, where they could potentially face Germany or Paraguay, while the losing side will see their World Cup campaign come to an end.

France, champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, entered the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the trophy and have lived up to those expectations so far. They have scored 10 goals while conceding just twice across their three group-stage matches. Heading into this contest, France are overwhelming favourites, both based on current form and the strength of their squad on paper.

However, Graham Potter is a manager known for his fighting spirit and tactical discipline, and he will be determined to make life difficult for France. Sweden have their own strengths despite entering the contest as underdogs. They began their campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia before suffering a 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands and playing out a draw against Japan in their final group fixture.

This World Cup has already produced several surprise results, and Sweden will hope to add another to that list. Here are five key individual battles that could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the contest.

5. Aurelien Tchouameni vs Yasin Ayari

Aurelien Tchouameni, the midfield general who anchors France’s midfield from a deeper position, is expected to face a stern challenge from Sweden’s energetic midfielder Yasin Ayari. Ayari is an exceptional progressive ball carrier who thrives in tight spaces thanks to his technical ability. He also has an eye for finding pockets of space around the edge of the box and poses a genuine goal threat from midfield.

Tchouameni, meanwhile, is calm and composed in possession and consistently positions himself well to break up opposition attacks through timely interceptions and tackles. His physical presence is another major strength, something Ayari lacks and could struggle to cope with in midfield duels.

4. Gabriel Gudmundsson vs Michael Olise

With four assists and several big chances created already in the tournament, Michael Olise has announced himself on the world stage in his first-ever FIFA World Cup campaign. The Bayern Munich playmaker possesses exceptional vision, dribbling ability, and delivery from both open play and set-pieces.

He will come up against Leeds United left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson, a player renowned for his relentless energy on the flanks and intelligent positioning to deal with wingers in one-on-one situations.

Olise has occasionally been criticised for not tracking back consistently, and with Gudmundsson likely to operate as a wing-back, the Swedish defender could have the freedom to push forward and deliver dangerous crosses into the box.

3. Jesper Karlstrom vs Ousmane Dembele

It is almost impossible for opposition managers to assign a marker to Ousmane Dembele, as the Ballon d’Or winner is given the freedom to roam across the attacking third. Although he usually starts behind Kylian Mbappe, he frequently drifts to either wing, interchanging positions with Michael Olise or Desire Doue.

Dembele heads into this fixture brimming with confidence after scoring a hat-trick against Norway in France’s final group game. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to shoot comfortably with either foot while using his outstanding dribbling ability to create space for himself.

Against Norway, Dembele was afforded too much room around the edge of the penalty area, and that is precisely where Jesper Karlstrom could be tasked with limiting his influence. The experienced Swedish defensive midfielder is known for his positional discipline and his ability to break up attacks through crucial interceptions.

However, Karlstrom’s declining pace could make life difficult against a player as agile and unpredictable as Dembele, making this one of the most intriguing battles of the match.

2. Viktor Gyokeres vs William Saliba

Club teammates at Arsenal, Viktor Gyokeres and William Saliba will put friendships aside as they battle for a place in the Round of 16. Gyokeres made an impressive start to the tournament with a goal and an assist against Tunisia before adding another assist in Sweden’s latest draw with Japan. He is known for his explosive pace, relentless pressing, and impressive physical strength, allowing him to outmuscle defenders.

However, he faces one of the toughest center-backs in world football in Saliba, who has already shown he can match physically dominant forwards such as Haaland. Gyokeres excels at making intelligent runs into the box to get ahead of defenders, but Saliba’s exceptional reading of the game allows him to anticipate those movements and cut out danger early.

If Sweden are able to create enough opportunities going forward, this duel could prove to be one of the standout battles of the match.

1. Kylian Mbappe vs Isak Hien

If Sweden are to have any chance of progressing, stopping France from scoring will be their biggest priority, and containing Kylian Mbappe will be at the heart of that challenge. Isak Hien, who has marshalled the center of Sweden’s defense throughout the tournament, will be tasked with trying to keep the French captain quiet.

Hien is a tall, physically imposing defender who thrives on aggressive man-marking and proactive defending. He also possesses impressive recovery pace, an essential quality when facing a player of Mbappe’s caliber. Mbappe’s qualities need little introduction. France’s all-time leading goalscorer has already found the net four times in the tournament and remains the biggest attacking threat for Les Bleus.

His blistering pace, intelligent movement inside the box, and ability to twist away from defenders in tight spaces are all areas that could trouble Hien, who has occasionally struggled against attackers blessed with elite mobility.
