Salah has won this year’s award.
Every year, the player who is deemed to have been the best of the English football season receives the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, also known as the FWA Footballer of the Year or just the Footballer of the Year in England.
Stanley Matthews, a winger for Blackpool, was the first recipient of the FWA award, which has been given out since the 1947–48 campaign. Mohamed Salah of Liverpool is the most recent recipient of the FWA award as of 2024–2025.
With three wins apiece, Thierry Henry and Salah have won the accolade the most out of the nine players who have won it more than once.
Members of the Football Writers’ Association FWA which consists of about 400 football journalists spread across England, vote to choose the winner. Charles Buchan, a former professional football player who is now a writer and one of the Association’s founders, proposed the prize.
As of 2025, the prize had been given to 68 players 77 times. Once, for a season, two players split the prize.

In her second season with Arsenal, the England international has performed exceptionally well, particularly under new boss Renee Slegers.
She is on track to share the Golden Boot with Khadija “Bunny” Shaw of Man City, having scored 12 goals in 20 WSL games.
When the Gunners play Russo’s old team, Manchester United, for second place in the standings in their last WSL match of the season, she might win the award.
