The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat against Saints in the FA Cup.
The Gunners suffered an FA Cup shock and were defeated on the south coast. To make matters worse, they are now concerned about one of their top players’ fitness.
At the 72-minute mark, Gabriel Magalhães, who had started at the centre of defence, was replaced by William Saliba. This further exacerbated their night as one of the crucial stars was subbed off with a fear of a potential injury.
Mikel Arteta speaks on Gabriel Magalhães injury against Southampton

Arteta disclosed that Arsenal would need to evaluate his fitness after the Brazilian centre-back asked to be substituted. But he didn’t seem optimistic about the situation. This was not a tactical move for the Gunners as Arteta explained:
“I don’t know, I think he felt something – I don’t know exactly what it is. We’re going to have to assess him – but obviously when a player is asking to be substituted, it’s never good news.”
Gabriel started the evening with Cristhian Mosquera as his companion instead of Saliba. At St Mary’s, they failed to stop Southampton from taking the lead. With five minutes left, Shea Charles scored the Saints’ game-winning goal after Gabriel was taken off the field.
Gabriel has been one of their best players this season. So his loss to the club would be devastating as the season’s business end draws near. With a nine-point advantage over Manchester City in the title race, Arsenal are hoping to bounce back from a number of defeats.
