Gareth Barry backs Harry Kane to play until 40 like Cristiano Ronaldo

Harry Kane has been told to follow in Cristiano Ronaldo’s footsteps and play into his 40s. Former England player Gareth Barry told GOAL why the prolific striker for Bayern Munich shouldn’t be thinking about retiring.
Following in the footsteps of other all-time greats, Kane, who is only 32 and has many years ahead of him, is keen to add more trophies to his playing career.
When it comes to athletic longevity, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo, who was once a direct opponent of Kane’s Tottenham with Manchester United in the Premier League, continues to set the bar.
At the age of 41, the Portuguese superstar, who plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, continues to thrive strongly for both club and country.
Kane, who will turn 33 in July and is now one goal short of 50 in the 2025–26 season, hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down with Bundesliga winners Bayern. He is already the all-time top scorer for both Tottenham and England.

In addition, he is the Three Lions’ captain and a key figure in their World Cup preparations for 2026. Speaking exclusively to GOAL via BetMGM, Barry was questioned about whether Kane could play into his 40s because no clear contender has emerged to take over his No. 9 position with England.
“Why wouldn’t he? We all know what Harry Kane’s like as a person, a professional – he keeps to himself, to himself, there’s no front-page headlines, looks after himself. I think he can play into his 40s. He can keep that level.
“So, keep Harry Kane fit and we don’t have to worry about the depth around him. Obviously, you’re going to need an option or two, now and again, just to mix things up. But, Harry Kane, for me, he can play until he’s 40. The players, longevity seems to be a bit easier now with the sports science and things like that. I think Harry Kane can keep going.”
