Germany secure Euro 2024 last 16 spot with 2-0 win over Hungary
Goals were scored from Ilkay Gundogan and Jamal Musiala.
With goals from Ilkay Gundogan and Jamal Musiala, Germany defeated Hungary 2-0 on Wednesday in Group A, becoming the first team to advance to the Euro 2024 knockout stage.
With two victories from two matches, the Germans are certain to be within the top four third-place teams and should Scotland lose to Switzerland later on Wednesday, they are likely to finish in the first and second places of the group. Hungary would then not be able to finish in the top two.
After some appalling Hungarian defending caused the ball to be pushed into Musiala’s path by Gundogan, the 21-year-old needed no further invitation as he hammered the ball in via a defender to give the Germans an early advantage in the 22nd minute.
Hungary squandered several good opportunities and had a goal disallowed in stoppage time in the first half through Roland Sallai. The three points were secured by Gundogan’s easy finish in the 67th minute following an excellent build-up.

As of right now, the Germans are among the top third-placed teams and will be assured of a spot in the top two should Scotland lose their second Group A match against Switzerland.
The Germany captain, Ilkay Gundogan, increased the advantage in the 67th minute to complete the victory and help them advance to the Euro 2024 Round of 16. The Germans’ first goal came from Jamal Musiala in the 22nd minute.
