Both Germany and the Ivory Coast won their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany, one of the favourites to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, began their campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 thrashing of tournament debutants Curacao. Despite conceding, the Germans dominated the game in every aspect and sent a strong message to the rest of the competition about their title credentials.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, were relatively less convincing in their opening fixture but still managed to secure all three points, which is often the most important thing in a short tournament like the World Cup. Amad Diallo emerged as the hero, coming off the bench to score a dramatic winner in the 90th minute.
Having won their respective opening matches, both teams are in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages. A victory in this encounter would likely seal qualification and allow either side to approach their final group-stage game with far less pressure.
Here are five individual battles that could play a major role in determining the outcome when Germany and the Ivory Coast face off at Toronto Stadium in Canada on June 20.

5. Aleksandar Pavlovic vs Franck Kessie
Aleksandar Pavlovic, the technically gifted midfielder who excels for both Germany and Bayern Munich, is set for an intriguing battle in the middle of the park against Franck Kessie. Pavlovic is known for his press resistance, composure on the ball, and exceptional passing ability. His skill set allows him to dictate the tempo of the game from a deeper midfield role and maintain possession even in difficult situations.
Kessie, on the other hand, excels at winning ground duels and making crucial tackles and interceptions to regain possession in midfield with his tenacity. His physical attributes could give him an advantage over Pavlovic, who is not as dominant and often struggles in that aspect of the game.
4. Florian Wirtz vs Guela Doue
Guela Doue, the Ivory Coast’s right-back, is a modern full-back who contributes significantly in attack while remaining defensively solid in 1v1 situations. However, he is likely to face a very different challenge against Florian Wirtz. Although Doue is effective going forward, he can sometimes be caught out by intelligent movement from opposition attackers rather than direct dribbling. This is precisely where Wirtz excels.
The German playmaker frequently drifts into central areas and attacks spaces across the frontline, making him difficult to track. His positional flexibility could create problems for Doue, who occasionally struggles with positioning and may find himself dragged into uncomfortable situations. This could leave space for players such as Nathaniel Brown or Jamal Musiala to exploit on the left side.
3. Nico Schlotterbeck vs Ange-Yoan Bonny
Ange-Yoan Bonny, who is expected to lead the line in the absence of Elye Wahi, faces an interesting battle against Germany centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck. Bonny offers a strong physical presence up front and is particularly effective in aerial duels and hold-up play. His ability to retain possession and bring teammates into attacking moves is one of the strongest aspects of his game.
Schlotterbeck, meanwhile, is known for his aggressive defensive style and willingness to step out of defence to win possession higher up the pitch. Against a striker like Bonny, this approach could be both beneficial and risky.
If the German defender wins the ball, he can stop attacks before they develop. However, if he mistimes his challenge or fails to regain possession, he could leave significant space behind him for Bonny to exploit with his pace and finishing ability.
2. Nathaniel Brown vs Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo is an excellent technical dribbler who thrives in tight spaces, using his low centre of gravity and close control to beat defenders. He is also capable of operating as an inverted winger, cutting inside to either deliver dangerous crosses towards the far post or test the goalkeeper with shots of his own.
He is expected to come up against Nathaniel Brown, a left-back who is often praised for his attacking contributions in the final third. Brown is particularly effective with his crossing and overlapping runs, which can leave space behind him for opposition attackers to exploit.
While this could present opportunities for Amad to attack on the counter, Brown remains a capable 1v1 defender. Additionally, Germany’s tactical setup is well-equipped to provide defensive cover and help manage the threat posed by the Ivorian winger.
1. Joshua Kimmich vs Yan Diomande
Yan Diomande, who started on the right wing against Ecuador and caused numerous problems for Piero Hincapie, is expected to switch to the left flank to accommodate Amad Diallo on the opposite side.
Diomande was arguably the Ivory Coast’s most dangerous attacker in the opening game, leading the team in chances created, progressive carries, and attacking-third passes. His performance highlighted why he is regarded as one of the most exciting young wingers in European football.
He is expected to face Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, one of the most experienced defenders in world football. Kimmich is renowned for his positional awareness, timing in tackles and interceptions, and exceptional passing range.
Operating as an inverted right-back, Kimmich often moves into midfield to help control possession and dictate the tempo of the game. While this benefits Germany in possession, it can also leave space in wide areas out of possession if the Ivory Coast choose to play direct football. Given Kimmich’s lack of recovery pace, Diomande could potentially exploit those spaces and create problems for the German defence in transition.
