Germany have failed to reach the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time.
Paraguay defeated Germany 4-3 on penalties to secure a spot in the round of 16. The fixture became the first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the result decided in a penalty shootout.
After 40 minutes of Germany’s high-pressure and possession-dominant game, Paraguay scored on their first serious goalscoring opportunity. Julio Enciso found the back of the net with a header on a low cross from Matias Galarza. The first half concluded with La Albirroja being in the driver’s seat.
Kai Havertz later scored the equaliser for the 2014 champions in the second half. For the remainder of the regular time, no team managed to convert an opportunity. In the first half of the extra time, Jonathan Tah’s header on a corner was ruled out before Orlando Gill was fouled during the buildup.
La Albirroja started playing more aggressive, physical football in the second half of extra time. They created more chances and fought heavily for possession, which also resulted in no bookings by the referee. The game was eventually forced into penalties, and La Albirroja won. The four-time champions have lost a penalty shootout in the World Cup for the first time.
On that note, let’s take a look at the five key takeaways from the FIFA World Cup 2026 clash:
5. Manuel Neuer and Julian Nagelsmann’s temperament

Manuel Neuer is unarguably one of the most experienced players in the German line-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, his temperament has not been the best. In the second half against Paraguay, he was seen elbowing Gustavo Gomez.
Meanwhile, Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, was also screaming from the sidelines. The former Bayern Munich manager hasn’t been very happy with his side’s performance in the summer competition, and he makes it visible.
However, Nagelsmann and Paraguay boss Gustavo Alfaro were both booked during the first half of the extra time following Jonathan Tah’s header, which was ruled out.
4. First extra time & penalty shootout in the 2026 FIFA World Cup
Germany were expected to secure an easy win over Paraguay and advance to the round of 16 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. However, that did not happen. Julian Nagelsmann’s side struggled against La Albirroja, who were reluctant to concede.
Gustavo Alfaro’s side was moving like a tank in front of the goal. Most goalscoring attempts made by the four-time champions were being contained by Paraguay’s defence, and the remainder were saved by Orlando Gill.

3. Matias Galarza is Paraguay’s breakout star
Paraguay briefly had possession against Germany. However, whenever they had the ball, Matias Galarza was the anchor. The 24-year-old played as the creative engine for La Albirroja, also assisting the only goal scored in the regular time by Paraguay.
As the left midfielder in Gustavo Alfaro’s side, Matias Galarza also had seven defensive contributions in regular time. He teamed up with Junior Alonso to work effectively on the left flank in attack and defence.
2. Germany and set pieces
Germany are in need of a better tactical approach for set pieces. The four-time champions got numerous corners and a few free kicks, which they failed to capitalise on. On most occasions, it turned out to be a changing practice for Orlando Gill.
Leroy Sane has been Germany’s primary set-piece taker; however, the former Bayern Munich and Manchester City forward has not been at his best. On corners, Jonathan Tah also looked hesitant to take a dive to take headers, even from dangerous positions. The lapses eventually led to the side’s elimination from the tournament.
Nevertheless, Orlando Gill should also be praised for his performance. In 120 minutes, he displayed commendable composure, making six saves and 13 recoveries. He also made two crucial saves in the penalty shootout.
1. Round of 16 for the first time since 2010
Paraguay has reached the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2010. They enjoyed their best campaign in the tournament during the same edition. Before the ongoing competition, La Albirroja had only one knockout-stage victory in the World Cup, in 2010.
After being eliminated from the group stage of two consecutive campaigns, Germany are heading out of the tournament from the round of 32, as Julian Nagelsmann might reconsider a few tactical decisions, especially in attack.
