Germany have qualified for the knockouts of the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2014.

Germany, who finished as Group E winners despite a last-minute setback in their final group-stage game against Ecuador, will take on Paraguay, who finished third in their group and secured qualification to the knockouts as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

The Round of 32 clash between the two sides is scheduled to take place at the Boston Stadium in Massachusetts, United States, on June 29.

Germany enjoyed a flying start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with back-to-back victories. They opened with a commanding 7-1 win over Curaçao before edging Ivory Coast 2-1 in their second game. However, they suffered a defeat in their final group-stage match and head into the Round of 32 clash low on confidence.

Paraguay, on the other hand, sealed their place in the knockout stage on the final day of the group stage with a goalless draw against Australia. They finished third in Group D with four points, including a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Turkey in their second group-stage fixture.

Heading into the game against Germany, Paraguay know they are not the favourites on paper. However, football is a game full of surprises. Ecuador proved that Germany can be beaten despite their quality, and Paraguay will be hoping to draw inspiration from that result.

Here are five key battles that could play a crucial role in deciding the outcome of the Round of 32 clash in Boston on June 29.

5. Florian Wirtz vs Juan Jose Caceres

Florian Wirtz, who usually starts on the left wing for Germany, has the luxury and freedom to interchange positions across the frontline throughout the game. He frequently rotates positions with Musiala, Sane and Havertz, making Germany’s attack fluid and difficult to track.

Wirtz excels in tight spaces and consistently creates chances through his brilliant vision and incisive passing. He will come up against Caceres, who is renowned for his 1v1 defending, work rate and physicality on the flanks. The Paraguayan defender is moderately physical and aggressive with his interceptions, a profile that can trouble Wirtz, who is not the most physical attacker.

4. Joshua Kimmich vs Matias Galarza

Matias Galarza is one of Paraguay’s most versatile players, capable of operating both in midfield and on the wings. He possesses an excellent work rate, wins plenty of tackles and interceptions, and is not afraid to test the goalkeeper from long range, as he showed with his winner against Turkey.

Galarza is also an intelligent presser, but he comes up against Joshua Kimmich, a player who rarely gives possession away. Kimmich excels at right-back by drifting into midfield to dictate play. Galarza’s movement from midfield to the wings and Kimmich’s movement from the flank into midfield make this an intriguing tactical battle.

3. Felix Nmecha vs Diego Gomez

The contest between two of the best box-to-box midfielders on either side is expected to be one of the most fascinating battles in the middle of the park. Both Gomez and Nmecha have been the driving force for their teams throughout the tournament, constantly pressing, winning possession and carrying the ball forward.

Both midfielders also have a knack for making late runs into the box and contributing goals. While Nmecha is highly press-resistant, Gomez stands out for his aggressive pressing and ability to win tackles, making this individual battle even more competitive.

2. Aleksandar Pavlovic vs Julio Enciso

Julio Enciso is one of Paraguay’s most exciting attacking players. Usually operating behind the striker or as an advanced midfielder, Enciso excites fans with his flair, creativity and ability to unlock defences. He also possesses a powerful long-range shot and unpredictable off-ball movement.

He will come up against Aleksandar Pavlovic, Germany’s holding midfielder, who stays deeper to provide defensive cover while allowing players like Nmecha greater attacking freedom. Pavlovic is calm in possession, rarely loses the ball and consistently maintains a passing accuracy above 90 per cent.

While Enciso thrives at finding pockets of space around the penalty area, Pavlovic excels at reading attacking movements and making timely tackles, making this an intriguing individual battle.

1. Kai Havertz vs Omar Alderete

Kai Havertz has experienced an inconsistent tournament so far. After opening his World Cup campaign with a brace against Curaçao, he has failed to register either a goal or an assist in Germany’s last two matches.

He will face Omar Alderete, a defender who excels inside the penalty area with his positioning, aerial ability and physical strength. However, Alderete faces a different kind of challenge against Havertz, whose tendency to drop deep and link up play can drag defenders out of position.

Havertz is also an aggressive counter-presser, while Alderete has shown signs of making mistakes under intense pressure. That is an area Germany will look to exploit.
