Gianluca Scamacca returns to training just 3 months after ACL tear

The Italian striker was expected to miss the entire season.
Former West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca was spotted practising with Atalanta just three months after he tore his ACL.
Scamacca only spent one season with the Premier League team after being signed by the Hammers in 2022 for an initial £35 million. Scamacca missed the rest of the season, including West Ham’s Europa Conference League victory, after undergoing surgery in April 2023 due to a knee injury.
In the subsequent transfer window, Scamacca returned to Serie A to join Atalanta, where he scored 19 goals in 44 games for the Europa League winners last season. But the 25-year-old sustained an ACL injury back in August.
Although it appeared that Scamacca would miss much of the season due to the injury, he has been spotted training with Atalanta.
The Italian striker is recuperating faster than expected and may possibly be ready to play again in early January, according to a September report from Sky Sports Italia.
It was unexpected to see him throughout the training, as this kind of injury usually necessitates at least six months off. He was not anticipated to return to the field until February 2025.
Before going back to Bergamo for the Atalanta facilities in November, he continued to work with the medical staff at the Villa Stuart facility in Rome, which is also his hometown.
Scamacca was Atalanta’s second player to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament tear, following Giorgio Scalvini, who missed Italy’s EURO 2024 matches due to the injury in early June.
Additionally, Atalanta, who are only one point behind Antonio Conte’s Napoli in the Serie A standings, would probably benefit greatly from Scamacca’s return to action. In their first 12 Serie A games this season, Gian Piero Gasperini’s team have won eight of them, including a rout of Napoli.
When Atalanta travelled to Naples in early November, they defeated the current Serie A leaders 3-0.
