The Bavarians have a new number 10.

When a player at Bayern Munich is assigned the number 10, it’s an honour rather than just a number on the uniform. The letter “ten” represents imagination, zeal, and accountability.

Great game leaders and thinkers, ball artists, and fan favourites who could make game-changing decisions have all had it emblazoned on their jerseys.

Jamal Musiala is now carrying on their legacy with joyous exuberance, extraordinary talent, and the capacity to create history of his own. Before he begins this chapter, though, it’s important to look back: who were FC Bayern’s most important number 10s?

5. Arjen Robben

After occasionally shining throughout his tenures at Real Madrid and Chelsea, Arjen Robben arrived at Bayern in 2009 with a reputation as something of a prima donna. However, Robben’s spiritual home turned out to be Bavaria. He scored 23 goals in his debut season and finally brought consistency to his game, which had been absent.

The brilliant Dutchman was one of the greatest Bayern Munich players to wear No. 10 at the back. The player later went on to rack up another 121 goals for Bayern, including a spectacular, audacious goal against Borussia Dortmund that secured his club the Champions League at Wembley in 2013.

4. Roy Makaay

After witnessing the Dutchman produce a hat-trick against them for Deportivo La Coruna at the Olympiastadion in the 2002–23 Champions League, Bayern Munich made a big move to bring Roy Makaay. After Makaay won the European Golden Shoe that season, there was a bidding war, and Bayern beat Manchester United and Chelsea to purchase him for a then-club-record €19 million (£16 million/$20 million).

It would turn out to be a wise investment. He also inherited ten at the back. Makaay became one of the greatest Bayern Munich players to wear No. 10, scoring 102 goals in 178 games while winning four domestic trophies.

3. Lothar Matthäus

The most obvious proof of Lothar Matthaus’ genius is the fact that he accumulated 150 caps for Die Mannschaft before he retired and hung up his boots in 2000. In his first term with the team (from 1984 to 1988), he was an all-action, box-to-box midfielder. But in his second spell, he took on the role of sweeper.

Matthaus, who was born in Erlangen, flourished there. Although his career peaked on the international scene, he was a true warrior at the club level as well. He was a certified all-rounder who could forestall attacks with little difficulty and use a variety of passes to put Bayern Munich in a counterattacking position.

2. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, one of the greatest Bayern Munich players to wear No. 10, took on the brunt of the goal-scoring responsibilities between 1974 and 1984. He did so with grace and elegance.

Instead of being your typical centre-forward, because of his flawless fusion of skill and flair, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner was frequently compared to Diego Maradona. Although the mysterious Rummenigge hardly received the credit he merited, it would be a mistake to downplay how important he was during a significant chapter in the club’s legendary history.

1. Uli Hoeneß

Yes, throughout his professional soccer career, Uli Hoeneß wore FC Bayern Munich’s number ten jersey. Between 1971 and 1978, he played as an offensive all-rounder, mostly on the wings, and he wore the number 10 shirt. He won three consecutive European Cups (1974, 1975, and 1976) and three German titles (1972, 1973, and 1974) at that time.
