The former Real Madrid star took a dig at his former teammate.

“Unlike Messi, he isn’t up to the task in the big games,” the former Real Madrid midfielder Guti said boldly taking a dig at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although Guti, a former midfielder for Real Madrid, believes that Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic player, he believes that the Portugal international falls short of Lionel Messi in terms of performance when it counts most.

Because he can perform at his peak during crucial games, he thinks Lionel Messi of Barcelona is the better player in any situation.

“He (Ronaldo) is a great player and has been decisive in many matches. However, what happens in the big games is that he fails to show good form – something Lionel Messi has done for Barcelona. The real stars are those players who shine in big moments,” said Guti speaking to the media.

Guti’s remarks were made just a few months prior to his retirement announcement. He played 25 games alongside Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid before leaving the team in 2010. He even combined with CR7 for three goals, all of which were scored by the Portuguese.

In 2020, when discussing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Guti once again acknowledged that he liked the Argentine better than his former teammate. He asserted that when he was on the field, the current Inter Miami star always shows up.

“It is true that I recently tweeted that I chose Messi, but I value highly what Cristiano has done. He is a great player. Messi has more talent, Cristiano is more of a goalscorer, more ambition, he is a self-made player. It is incredible that in the era of Messi, he has been able to win five Ballons d’Or. He has been massively important, as he showed at Real Madrid. He has been an important factor, above all for his goalscoring productivity. Especially in big games. Real Madrid have missed Ronaldo,” he added.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have acknowledged that they are nearing retirement. Both players have indicated that they may retire in the coming years after having already departed European football. The Barcelona great plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, while the former Real Madrid star plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
