Ronaldo set to captain Portugal in his third Euro.

When Portugal overcame host nation France in the championship match of Euro 2016, Cristiano Ronaldo and the Selecao emerged victorious.

The 39-year-old Al-Nassr attacker, who has participated in the most Euros games (25) across the last five tournaments, is likely to compete in his final continental competition in 2024.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo won the Euro?

Portugal is placed in Group F of the 2024 European Championship alongside Georgia, Turkey, and Czechia. Notably, Portugal was also assigned to Group F in Euro 2016, which included Austria, Hungary, and Iceland.

In their opening game of Euro 2016, Nani’s goal helped the Selecao draw 1-1 with Iceland. Portugal finished third in the group, below Iceland and Hungary, advancing to the knockout stage based solely on goal differential.

In the final moments of extra time, Portugal upset Luka Modric’s Croatia in the round of 16. Danijel Subasic produced a spectacular save to deny Cristiano Ronaldo, but Ricardo Quaresma scored from close range to secure the win.

Portugal then overcame Poland in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout to secure a semifinal matchup with Wales.

Both teams played a methodical first half in the semifinal, which ended in a scoreless draw. However, Ronaldo broke the tie just after halftime with a powerful header following a set piece, and a few minutes later he assisted Nani for the second goal.

In the final against host country France, Portugal faced a formidable challenge. They suffered a severe blow early in the first half when their talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo, was sidelined due to injury. Despite this setback, Eder’s goal in the 109th minute, his first in a competitive match, helped Portugal overcome the early adversity and win their first major tournament crown.
