La Tri have been one of the promising team in South America.

Underdogs Ecuador have managed to qualify for the knockout rounds of the 2024 Copa America following a hard-fought goalless draw against Mexico, which saw them finish second behind Group B table-toppers Venezuela.

Ecuador had a disappointing start to their campaign, suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Venezuela in their opening game, where they played the majority of the match with 10 men following an Enner Valencia red card in the 22nd minute. However, La Tri got their tournament back on track with a commanding 3-1 win over Jamaica in their next game.

With just a point needed from their final group game to qualify for the quarterfinals, Félix Sánchez’s side did exactly that, surviving the Mexican threat to conclude the game in a goalless draw and book their place in the knockout rounds of the competition.

Ecuador is set to face defending champion Argentina at the NRG Stadium in the quarterfinals. Argentina finished as table-toppers in Group A, ahead of Canada, Chile, and Peru.

La Tri has never won the Copa America in its history. They remain one of only two CONMEBOL members, along with Venezuela, that have not claimed the continental title.

Ecuador’s best performance in the Copa America came in 1993, when they hosted the competition and finished fourth overall in what proved to be a memorable tournament. They were incredible throughout that campaign but ultimately fell short of winning the coveted trophy.

During that run, La Tri had an exceptional group stage display, finishing as table toppers in their group and convincingly beating the United States in the process.

However, Ecuador’s amazing journey was brought to a halt as they were defeated 3-0 by Paraguay in the quarterfinal stage, crushing the nation’s hopes of a first-ever Copa America crown.

Overall, it was an incredibly successful tournament for Ecuador, as they achieved their best-ever finish in this competition.

In recent history, La Tri has consistently had mediocre campaigns at the Copa America, with occasional failures to qualify for the main tournament and frequent group stage and knockout round exits becoming a staple for the nation.

Heading into their decisive Copa America 2024 quarterfinal fixture, Argentina are heavy favourites to topple Ecuador and progress to the semifinal stage. Along with a bit of tournament luck, La Tri will need to be at their absolute best if they wish to overcome the mighty La Albiceleste.
