The Red Devils only won once in their group.
Leandro Trossard’s brace guided Belgium to a crucial win. The Red Devils emerged victorious with a commanding 5-1 win over New Zealand in their last group match.
Their victory moved them to the 2026 World Cup knockout rounds. Trossard scored his second in the 50th minute of the game.
Belgium broke the impasse in the 28th minute when Kevin De Bruyne’s corner deflected off New Zealand defender Tim Payne. It landed perfectly for Trossard to tap into the net from close range. This goal came after a penalty ruling was overturned with a VAR assessment.
Five minutes after halftime, the 31-year-old scored once again. He took up a sharp pass from De Bruyne and fired the ball home on his second try after his first attempt was stopped. In the 66th minute, De Bruyne scored by sweeping the ball in from the edge of the area.
Before replacements Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers scored to secure first place in the group ahead of Egypt, Elijah Just scored a late consolation goal for the Kiwis.
