The Three Lions were in the final of the 2020 edition

An optimistic generation of English fans has believed fervently for decades that football will return home when an international tournament is held.

It wasn’t until the mid-1990s that the phrase gained popularity, with England having just experienced “30 years of hurt” at the time. From then, the suffering has continued, and optimism has frequently resulted in death.

Though there have been dark days and dismal periods, the Three Lions have generally been endowed with a team that is capable of winning the most prestigious awards in sports, let alone challenging them. But in the lack of cutlery, the heroes of ’66 are still revered as the only ones who brought English victory to the highest level.

England’s history in the European Championship

We’ll be clear just in case you weren’t able to guess the answer: no.

England have sadly missed out on winning the European Championship, but they wasted their best opportunity to do it at home during the postponed Euro 2020, which was held the following year because of the Covid-19 outbreak. The majority of the Three Lions’ games were held at Wembley. They defeated their longtime rival along the road and led 1-0 against Italy in the championship game before falling short on penalties.

In the midst of the nostalgic joy of Euro 96, England was denied a shootout in heartbreak, losing to Germany from 12 yards in the semi-finals.

Even though there were only four teams battling it out, they came in third place in 1968 as well. In the third-place play-off, Sir Alf Ramsey’s defending champions defeated the Soviet Union after losing to Yugoslavia.

England’s first-ever Euro berth came eight years after the tournament’s first launch in 1960. Out of the four teams who participated in the 1968 European Championship, Sir Alf’s World Cup winners were defeated by Yugoslavia in the semi-finals, therefore missing out on adding the European title to their collection.

Thanks to goals from Sir Bobby Charlton & Sir Geoff Hurst, they managed to secure a third-place finish despite the Soviet Union’s defeat.
