Hong Kong suffer 3–1 defeat to Manchester United ahead of India clash

The Red Devils end their campaign with a resilient win over Hong Kong.
Manchester United FC wrapped up their post-season tour of Asia on a high note with a 3-1 comeback victory over the Hong Kong National Football Team. The win was thanks to second-half heroics from youngsters Chido Obi Martin and Ayden Heaven after an unlucky start to the game.
After a sluggish start and a disappointing 2-1 loss to the ASEAN All-Stars earlier in the week, Ruben Amorim’s side were determined to end the tour on a positive note. However, that goal seemed in jeopardy when Hong Kong’s Juninho stunned the visitors with a clinical finish in the 19th minute.
A surprising start to the game
The forward latched onto a through ball and curled a superb left-footed strike past veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, giving Ashley Westwood’s men a surprise 1-0 lead at halftime. The goal rocked Man Utd’s confidence, however, chances came and went for Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.
United looked sharper after the interval, with Amorim injecting energy by bringing on a flurry of young talents. The impact was immediate.
Chido Obi Martin stars for Manchester United
Chido Obi Martin, the highly-rated Danish-Nigerian forward, drew United level in the 50th minute. Latching onto a cross, Martin showed great composure to slot home at the far post. Just 27 minutes later, Obi added his name to the scoresheet with a powerful header from a corner, giving United the lead for the first time in the game.
Hong Kong tried to push forward in search of an equalizer, but were punished on the counter in the dying minutes. Heaven rose highest to head home a third, and sealing a well-earned 3-1 win.
For Amorim, the result was a satisfying end to what had been a mixed tour, offering a glimpse into the future of United’s youth setup. Despite the loss, Westwood’s Hong Kong side earned plaudits for their disciplined first-half display and will take confidence from pushing a European giant for much of the match.
India up next for Ashley Westwood’s side
Ashley Westwood’s Hong Kong will now face the Blue Tigers in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers on June 10. A must-win game for both sides as things are looking tight in terms of qualification.
Ahead of the upcoming game, the result will be encouraging for Hong Kong, who gave a good account of themselves against a European giant.
The Blue Tigers are sure to have their work cut out for them ahead of the big game.
