Barcelona lead LaLiga with 85 points from 33 games, 11 points ahead of Real Madrid. Madrid are on the verge of losing another title race with five games remaining. However, the way this story will develop over the next two weeks could be quite amazing for one side of the fan base.
Barca have two options for winning the championship as soon as possible. In both cases, Real Madrid don’t quite have any way to fight their way back into the race.
How can Barca get a guard of honour from Real Madrid?
Barcelona can clinch LaLiga before El Clasico. If they do, Real Madrid must give them a ‘Guard of Honour’ at Camp Nou.
On May 3, Madrid will play Espanyol, and on May 2, Barcelona will travel to play Osasuna. The point difference would rise to 14 if Madrid lose or draw with Espanyol and Barcelona defeat Osasuna.
But this possibility depends on Espanyol upsetting the Madrid powerhouses in a big way. However, Espanyol have fared poorly this season, hence it’s least expected from them to win against Los Blancos.
A determined Real Madrid team that needs every point to have a chance to close the deficit will be a formidable opponent for Espanyol. However, given Madrid’s recent performance, anything is possible.
Can Barcelona win the title in El Clásico?
If Madrid defeat Espanyol, a massive match on May 10 might determine the league title: El Clásico. It is the world’s biggest club football match.
Barcelona would need to get at least one point at Camp Nou in order to be crowned champions. Madrid would have to witness Barcelona win another league title.
