Los Blancos opened their Club World Cup campaign with a draw.
In their debut encounter of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States on Wednesday, Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Pro League powerhouse Al Hilal, which put them in a precarious position.
With a 2-1 victory for RB Salzburg in the same group as Madrid, the Austrian team are now in top spot in Group H.
In Wednesday nightâs Club World Cup Group H match, RB Salzburg defeated CF Pachuca 2-1 thanks to a goal from Karim Onisiwo in the 76th minute that broke the tie.
In front of 5,282 spectators at TQL Stadium, Salzburgâs Oscar Gloukh, a 21-year-old midfielder, scored in the 42nd minute.
Lightning in the region caused the game to be postponed for over an hour after the second half began. Less than a minute after play resumed, Bryan Gonzalez gave Pachuca an equaliser.
Salomon RondĂłn, the leader of Pachuca, had several opportunities, including one that went against the crossbar in the 31st minute, but was subsequently foiled by Christian Zawieschitzky, an 18-year-old goalie earning his Salzburg debut.
Onisiwo ended up scoring the game-winning goal when Salzburg replaced Edmund Baidoo in the second half.
How can Real Madrid qualify for the knockout stage?
The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 knockout stages will be accessible to the top two clubs in each group.
Real Madrid are in the second place in their group, given that Madrid have a higher score because of their stronger club ranking over the last four years.
The only team with no points in the group is Pachuca, which finished second in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup the previous year.
Madrid must win both of their upcoming games and hope that Al Hilal lose in order to qualify. It will be very difficult for Los Blancos to advance to the next round if Simone Inzaghiâs team wins both games.
