The FIFA World Cup 2026 features 48 teams instead of 32.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway, and teams are competing to secure a berth in the knockout round. The ongoing edition of the summer competition has been introduced with a few additions and changes. The most significant change in the tournament’s format was the addition of 16 more teams.
The ongoing edition features 48 teams and a new knockout round with 32 teams. The top two teams from every group will qualify for the last 32. However, the eight best-ranked among the 12 third-placed teams will also qualify for the first knockout round.
The added round could create significant complications for comprehension, as there are 495 possible combinations in which a group table topper can face a third-place side.
In addition, the head-to-head records of the teams have become the deciding factor, rather than goal difference, in the current edition. Thus, if teams have equal points, they will advance through head-to-head tiebreakers rather than goal difference.
With that being said, let’s take a look at how teams can qualify for the knock-out stage.

How will the head-to-head tiebreakers take place at the FIFA World Cup?
Step 1: Results between the tied teams (Head-to-Head)
- Team with more points earned in matches between the tied teams ranks higher.
- If still tied, the team with the better goal difference in those head-to-head matches ranks higher.
- If still tied, the team that scored more goals in those head-to-head matches ranks higher.
Step 2: Overall group-stage record
If teams are still level after applying the head-to-head criteria:
- Better overall goal difference in all group-stage matches.
- More goals scored in all group-stage matches.
- Better disciplinary record (fewer yellow and red cards received by players and team officials).
Step 3: FIFA World Ranking
- If teams are still tied after all the above criteria, the higher-ranked team in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking will be placed above the other.
