Today, Crystal Palace will take on Liverpool in the English top-flight curtain raiser.

In the FA Community Shield, 2024-25 Premier League champions Liverpool will play FA Cup winners Crystal Palace. However, can victory at Wembley on Sunday portend a prosperous season?

Out of the 14 previous season Community Shield victors, just one have gone on to win the league title at the end of the season.

Unexpectedly, the response to this question is mostly ‘No.’

Do the Shield winners never have a good season?

Only eight of the thirty-three Charity or Community Shield winners in Premier League history have won the league championship.

Five such events occurred in a six-year spell from 2005 to 2010. The latest side to achieve so was Manchester City in 2019. Before that, it was Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United who did it in 2011.

The teams that lose the Charity Shield have actually claimed more league titles since 1992 – ten in all, including City for three consecutive years between 2021 and 2023.

Despite winning the curtain-raiser against rival Manchester United last year, City had their poorest season in 2024-25 since 2016–17.

In almost 45% of cases (15/33), the upcoming season’s league winners had not participated in the Community Shield.

What about English top-flight winners from the previous season? Do they win the Community Shield?

How many Shields have been won by the league winners from the previous campaign is another topic.

The response is 18 times out of 33, or 55%.

The fact that the FA Cup winners have won seven of the last eleven Shields, compared to just five in the previous 22, gives Crystal Palace hope.

Additionally, neither the league nor the cup winners have taken home the trophy three times in the English top-flight’s history.

Manchester United (2010) and Arsenal (1999 and 2023) qualified as English top-flight runners-up and defeated the double winners in the match.

Do Community Shield winners end up not winning the league?

As per the stats, only eight of the thirty-three Shield winners have won the English top-flight league in history.
