Uruguay have some of the top players in the Continental championship.

One of the possible outside challengers for the 2024 Copa America title, other than the usual big guns Argentina and Brazil, is Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay team. They possess a strong balance of a star-studded youth core with experienced veteran figures to guide them to glory in such a massive tournament.

Uruguay kicked off their 2024 Copa America campaign in perfect fashion as they brushed aside a gritty Panama at the Hard Rock Stadium, courtesy of goals from Maximiliano Araujo, Darwin Nunez, and Matias Vina, to clinch an important 3-1 win.

The Group C table-toppers face Bolivia next at the MetLife Stadium. Bolivia is coming into this fixture on the back of a 2-0 defeat to the USA in their opening game. Uruguay aims to make it two wins out of two and set their foot in the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Historically, La Celeste have been the joint-most successful team in the competition’s history alongside Argentina, with a whopping 15 Copa America titles under their belt. Their most recent triumph came in 2011 when they defeated Paraguay 3-0 in the final.

Uruguay were the inaugural champions of the Copa America in 1916 when the tournament was officially introduced for the first time. La Celeste faced hosts Argentina in the final, which ended in a goalless 0-0 draw. However, since Uruguay had accumulated more points throughout the competition (a round-robin format at the time), they were ultimately crowned champions.

The first-ever Copa America was a small tournament with just four teams: Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil.

After their first crown, a period of assertive dominance commenced for the Uruguay national football team, as they were able to win a staggering nine more Copa America titles in the next 30 years.

Following an illustrious period for the nation, La Celeste couldn’t maintain their supremacy at the top in this competition, as they only managed to win four Copa America titles in 50 years.

In recent years, other than the 2011 Copa America success, Uruguay has consistently suffered quarter-final and semi-final exits in this tournament. During this period, they have failed to replicate their strong group stage showing in the decisive knockout rounds, resulting in several heartbreaking moments for the South American country.

After years of mediocrity, La Celeste looks like a completely rejuvenated side under mastermind coach Marcelo Bielsa. They aim to end their 13-year trophy drought in this competition by winning a record 16th title during the 2024 Copa America.
