In men’s domestic football in England, the EFL Cup, often known as the League Cup, is a season-long knockout football competition. It is now called the Carabao Cup for reasons related to sponsorship.
The English Football League (EFL) organizes the competition. All 92 teams from the Premier League, EFL Championship, League One, and League Two tiers of the English football league system are eligible to compete.
The English League Cup, which was first played in 1960–61, is played over rounds of competition that feature single-leg ties up until the semifinals. The final is a one-match title decider, whereas the semifinals are two-leg contests.
After defeating Chelsea in the 2023–24 EFL Cup final at London’s Wembley Stadium, Liverpool are the current EFL Cup champion.
The most EFL Cup victories are attributed to Liverpool. In addition to their four tournament runner-up results, the Reds have won the title ten times.
When Liverpool defeated West Ham United at Birmingham’s Villa Park during the 1980–81 season, it was their first League Cup victory. The final was won 2-1, thanks to a winning goal from the Reds’ great Alan Hansen.
The two teams with the most consecutive EFL Cup victories are Liverpool and Manchester City. Both teams raised the trophy four times in a row.
Liverpool won the League Cup in 1981–82, 1982–83, and 1983–84 after winning the tournament for the first time in 1980–81. In 1984, they famously defeated city rivals Everton at Wembley in an all-Merseyside final.
Once again, this season, the Reds will play in the final of the EFL Cup, and this time, they will face Newcastle United. The Reds will be hoping to continue their dominance in the tournament and win the trophy for the record 11th time.
