How many international trophies has Lionel Messi won with Argentina?
Messi has won every possible trophy win the national team.
Lionel Messi was able to claim one of the many trophies that had escaped him during his career after Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The attacker won four UEFA Champions League titles while playing for Barcelona, and he hardly ever goes a season without winning a championship at the club level.
However, Lionel Messi’s international record wasn’t very impressive until a few years ago because he lost several finals with Argentina.
Over the previous two years, Messi’s international trophy cabinet has rapidly grown, with the 2022 World Cup serving as his climactic achievement.
In 2021, the Argentine earned the Copa America final on his fourth try, ending his senior international title drought. In 2024, he was also a member of the squad that won the championship again in the US.
Lionel Messi had already won medals with Argentina’s Olympic and U20 teams more than ten years prior.
Messi’s pursuit of titles with Argentina was always far more challenging than his domestic success. Messi and Argentina had lost three consecutive finals: twice to Chile in consecutively Copa America championships, and once to Germany in the 2014 World Cup.
When Messi made it to another Copa America final in 2021, the outcome finally worked in his favour.
How many trophies has Lionel Messi won with Argentina?
Barring his club career, Messi’s time with Argentina has never been easy. The forward had to go through a lot of difficulties wearing the La Albiceleste jersey. His inability to win an international trophy with the national team saw him receive plenty of backlash from his own home (country).
Despite reaching plenty of finals and after losing them Messi had enough with the national team and decided to retire in 2016. But after some months he changed his mind and finally returned to the team, and led them to the qualification of the 2018 World Cup, where they were eliminated by France in the round of 16 which appeared to be his last World Cup.
It seemed international trophy was never in his destiny but Lionel Messi still continued to fight for the badge and helped Argentina reach the final of 2021 Copa America. It was a do-or-die situation for him because had he lost the final he certainly would have retired from the national team forever.
However, it was his day and finally in his career he was able to taste his first international glory in a national team shirt, and from there it all started for the former Barcelona player. Next year he won the FIFA World Cup and one year later he lifted another Copa America.
Even though he had to endure a lot of hardship and unrelenting criticism from the supporters during his time with the national team, he was able to follow his gut and put an end to the team’s trophy drought. It was not an easy conclusion, but he eventually succeeded with Argentina.
