The Red Devils will finally play again in the top European competition.
With their last Sunday victory over Liverpool, Manchester United officially returned to the UEFA Champions League, fulfilling Michael Carrick’s objective of leading the team back to the top league in European football.
There will be a strong desire for the biggest matches to return to the schedule following a season without European football. Eight games make up the new league phase, which United have not yet experienced.
Clubs are split into four pots based on their UEFA coefficient over the previous five years. Each team plays four games at home and four away against two opponents from each pot.
Each club that makes it to the Champions League gets €18.6 million (£16 million; $21.8 million), with further compensation determined by how well they perform in the league stage.
League phase – prize money (in €M)

| Starting fee | 18.6 |
| Per win | 2.1 |
| Per draw | 0.7 |
| Per position | 0.3 |
| 1st-8th finish | 2 |
| 9th-16th finish | 1.0 |
The true money-spinners, however, are the knockout stages, where there is progressively more money available as you advance through each round.
Knock-out phase – prize money (in €M)
| Play-offs | 1.0 |
| Round of 16 | 11 |
| Quarter-finals | 12.5 |
| Semi-finals | 15 |
| Final | 18.5 |
| Winners | 6.5 |
| Super Cup qualification | 4.0 |
| Total | 68.5 |
Just by participating in the competition, Manchester United will earn a considerable sum. If they progress in the tournament, they will make more money. However, before the start of the new season, the club have plenty of things on their plate to get done.
Reinforce the squad that will be ready to compete in the elite competition. But more importantly, they will have to find a manager who will be ready to guide them in the competition.
