Gianluigi Donnarumma won the Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament.

Since 1996, the most outstanding player at each UEFA European Championship has been awarded the UEFA EURO Player of the Tournament award. Some of the greatest players who have ever played the game have been among the past winners.

The issue at hand is: who will take home this award after the Spain and England game in the UEFA EURO 2024 final, which takes place at the Olympiastadion Berlin on Sunday night?

The award’s distinguished history and the selection process explained

A group of UEFA technical evaluators who have been extensively examining every match at every EURO since 1996 choose the Player of the Tournament winner.

Technical viewers for EURO 2024 include Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Frank de Boer, Fabio Capello, and Rafael Benítez. They will be creating data-driven reports on every match and sharing them with the world of football to give in-depth analyses of current coaching trends and strategies.

One of their responsibilities at the Euro 2024 is to choose the Player of the Match for every game. Following the final, they convene to choose four further awards: Team, Goal, Young Player, and Player of the Tournament.

An accomplished group of analysts, situated in Nyon, Switzerland, provide help to technical observers by providing them with footage and data for each Euro 2024 game. This makes it possible to analyse and decide in greater detail.

Technical observers consider individual results, the player’s influence on his team, and whether the player played with an upbeat mindset and empathy for the opposition when selecting the Player and Young Player of the Tournament.

“The work provided by UEFA’s technical observer group also form part of a strategy of translating findings from the EURO into actionable insights at all levels – be it elite youth, coach education or grassroots,” says Olivier Doglia, UEFA‘s head of technical education and development. “By looking at trends from the EURO, these articles can serve as an engine for player development across the European landscape.”
