The Frenchman had scored 17 goals for the Reds this season before this injury.

Liverpool have also been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League 2025-26. They were outplayed by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) across both legs of the quarterfinal. The Premier League side lost 0-4 on aggregate.

The Arne Slot-led side will now go on to have a trophyless season. They had already been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and now the European competition. As of now, they are placed fifth on the English Premier League points table and with just six matches remaining, the Reds will not even come close to defending their title.

Other than underwhelming performances on the pitch, Liverpool FC have seen injury problems this season. The Dutch manager has made some poor decisions in his team selection, also. But one shining light for the fans was the form of new signing Hugo Ekitike.

Hugo Ekitike set to sit out the rest of the season

The 23-year-old has been an important aspect for Liverpool FC in the final third. He has scored 17 goals and has six assists across all competitions this season, but has now ruptured his right Achilles tendon.

Hugo Ekitike will now miss nine to 12 months of action due to this injury, which also means he is going to miss FIFA World Cup 2026 for France.

Hugo Ekitike was replaced by Mohamed Salah during the 32nd minute of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal second leg. This injury has ended his season. The Frenchman only joined the Reds during the summer 2025 transfer window.

During the post-match interview, Arne Slot said, “I think we could all see that it didn’t look well and didn’t look good. Let’s wait and see what it will be. But we could all see it didn’t look good.”

The absence of the young forward is only going to become a problem for Liverpool FC, who are already struggling at the moment. But this will open the door for Alexander Isak to get a run of games and find his feet at the club.

What injury has Hugo Ekitike sustained?

The Frenchman has ruptured his right Achilles tendon and will be out of action for approximately nine months.

Will Hugo Ekitike play in FIFA World Cup 2026?

No, he has sustained a serious injury and will miss nine months of action.

Can Liverpool win a trophy in 2025-26 season?

They will now go trophyless this season after getting knocked out from the UCL.
