The Argentine midfielder has fueled speculations of a Chelsea exit with recent comments.

After acknowledging his desire to live in the Spanish capital, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has ignited new rumours about a transfer to Real Madrid next summer. The FIFA World Cup winner expressed a preference for speaking his mother tongue while discussing his dream of living in Madrid in a candid YouTube interview.

His remarks have heightened speculation that he may move to the Bernabeu in the future, even though he has a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

After his sit-down on the YouTube channel Avirales, there have been a lot of rumours linking him to Real Madrid. The 25-year-old, who signed with Chelsea in early 2023 for a then-British record €121 million, was surprisingly open about his preferences for a future outside of the Premier League.

Enzo Fernandez acknowledged that the cultural and language shift from life in England continues to influence his long-term thinking, even though he has been a staple in the Blues’ midfield this season, producing eight goals and three assists in 30 games.

Importantly, he mentioned that Madrid’s environment makes him think of his hometown of Buenos Aires, indicating a strong connection to the Spanish metropolis.

Enzo Fernandez was questioned about where he would like to live if he were to leave London during the sit-down. Despite his initial reluctance to choose a specific club, it was evident that he preferred a move to LaLiga. After that the Chelsea star disclosed:

“I’d like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live where they want. I’d live in Madrid. I get by in English, but I’d be more comfortable in Spanish.”

Fernandez was also surprisingly candid about his long-term career path and a possible return to South America. He said:

“I’ll go back to River, but not to retire – I want to return while I’m still at my best.”

Which club did Enzo Fernández play for in Argentina?

River Plate.

When did the midfielder join Chelsea?

In 2023.
