The defending champions prevailed 2-0 in a warm-up game.

Argentina’s 2-0 friendly victory over Honduras prior to the World Cup in Texas demonstrated the team’s significant depth. The team easily controlled the game even without their leader on the pitch. They are establishing their tactical identity and preparing for their title defence.

They will now head to the next friendly game before opening their World Cup against Algeria. However, before that, we take a look at five things we learned from Argentina’s win over Honduras.

Five important things we learned from Argentina’s win over Honduras pre-World Cup 2026

5. Emergence of new talent

While other young talents like Valentino Barco, Tomas Aranda, and Joaquin Freitas were allowed to play for the national team in the friendly, Giuliano Simeone stepped up to increase the lead in the 54th minute. It helped demonstrate manager Lionel Scaloni’s excellent incorporation of new faces. Scaloni will rely on them for the World Cup after their brief participation.

4. Squad adjustments ongoing

With Nico Paz also recuperating from an injury, Scaloni acknowledged that the team is not quite at 100% yet. He added that the coaching staff may need to reconsider their tactical configuration before the tournament starts. This is due to recent injuries like Leonardo Balerdi.

The reigning champions have been severely impacted by injuries. But several of their players were at the top of their game against Honduras. Cristian Romero also made a comeback from an injury.

Argentina will hope that every player is available for the first World Cup match with just one friendly match remaining.

3. Lionel Messi rested as a precaution

In preparation for the 2026 World Cup, Lionel Messi missed Argentina’s friendly match against Honduras. It was due to a slight strain in his left hamstring and ongoing muscle tiredness.

Messi, who will turn 39 in three weeks, warmed up with his teammates at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field before Saturday night’s game. However, he remained on the bench. Messi watched Argentina’s 2-0 victory from the sidelines.

2. Mixed lineup with young & experienced stars

Lionel Scaloni decided to deploy a lineup blended with veterans and young stars. There were four young stars in the starting lineup to test how the team would gel in the match. Even though it was the first warm-up game, it yielded positive results. All the players in the starting XI performed to their level.

However, against Iceland, he could rotate the lineup. Lionel Messi is expected to be back from the injury. We can also witness a few changes.

1. Defensive dominance

Argentina’s impenetrable defensive form was demonstrated in the second half when Honduras laboured offensively. They hardly crossed the halfway mark. As the defence of their crown draws near, Scaloni stated his team demonstrated a strong identity despite playing some of his younger squad players.

“Maybe it could have been done better, but as for the team’s hallmark, its identity, I think it remains intact, and that’s the most important thing. That’s what we’re looking for, in the end, not to break that identity,” he said.

When will Lionel Messi return from injury?

The report says he will return against Iceland.

When is Argentina’s first World Cup game?

17th June, 6:30 am IST, against Algeria.
