The Iran national football team is now gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They are likely to contest in two international friendly matches before heading to the biggest stage of them all.
A total of 48 teams will be battling for the mega prize. There will be 104 matches played across three host nations.
Team Melli performed really well during the World Cup qualifiers. They topped their group after winning seven out of their 10 games. This helped them to secure a direct spot for the mega competition, which is all set to take place in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
They are placed in group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. Even though Iran have never gone past the group stage at FIFA’s flagship competition, their strong performances during the qualifiers have increased their chances of proceeding further this time around. They have qualified for the mega competition a total of six times, and this is their fourth consecutive entry.
Iran’s head coach Amir Ghalenoei has now announced a 30-man preliminary squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026. They will now begin training in Tukiye and are set to complete visa applications before heading to the United States of America.
Ghalenoei will soon be making some omissions from the squad. The final 26-man team is likely to be announced by June 1.
