The Norway national football team will be happy with the 4-1 win in their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2026. This will boost their confidence for the rest of their games. They still need to work on their tactics, but they will be impressed with their result against Iraq.
Five important things we learned:
1. Erling Haaland shines on World Cup debut

The Manchester City star came in to bag a brace for the Norway national football team in their opening game of the 2026 World Cup against Iraq. He was the one to break the deadlock in the 29th minute and then helped his side double the lead at the end of the first half. Erling Haaland showed a brilliant display on the world stage.

2. Attack remains Norway’s strength
The Landslaget might have looked vulnerable in other departments, but their performance in the final third once again helped them come out on top. Erling Haaland scored the brace, Leo Ostigard fired a brilliant header in the 76th minute and Aymen Hussein was the one to deflect the ball in for an own goal.
3. Aymen Hussein made Iraq hopeful

Aymen Hussein scored the second-ever goal for the Iraq national football team at the FIFA World Cup. He scored the leveller for his side before Erling Haaland put Norway back in front. Hussein’s was surely very crucial for the Lions of Mesopotamia, but it was not enough to help his side secure a positive outcome.
4. Iraq’s struggle in defence
The Graham Arnold-led side showed signs of life in the first half, but were dominated in the second. They could’ve established better control of the ball and it might have helped them achieve a positive result. The Iraqi national football team can develop better midfield control, which will also be crucial for them to attain a strong final third presence.
5. Midfield masterclass ft. Martin Odegaard
Even though he failed to engrave his name on the scoresheet for the Norway national football team, Martin Odegaard’s presence in the midfield was pretty crucial for his side. He was the main anchor of 63% possession for the Landslaget. With his help, Norway was also able to maintain good composure in passing. Odegaard also bagged an important assist.
