Portugal have gained 10 points in four World Cup qualifiers since claiming a record-breaking second UEFA Nations League title in June. They now lead Group F, five points ahead of their closest rivals, Hungary.

Before he decides to put up his boots, the 40-year-old Al-Nassr attacker is desperate to lead his nation in what will be his last international competition.

The Republic of Ireland haven’t qualified for the World Cup since 2006. But last month’s crucial 1-0 home victory against 10-man Armenia in their fourth Group F match has increased their chances of making it to the 2026 competition.
