Should the Red Devils start looking for Dutchman’s successor?

Erik ten Hag is currently in his third season at Manchester United as their manager. The club are still in a similar situation as they were in their last term under him.

Now their 1-1 draw in the UEFA Europa League against Twente further underlined that the club continue to show a lack of identity under the Dutch manager. After the game, goalscorer Christian Eriksen said that the visitors wanted it more than us during the game.

“It was far from good enough,” said Eriksen. “They looked like they wanted it more—that can’t be right. We didn’t lose, but it feels like a loss.”

This is a sad reality for the club as they remain one with low confidence, while the former Ajax manager has failed to ignite the right attitude of the players on the pitch. This is not the first time that United have struggled on European nights. Last season as well they were below par and were eliminated from the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

United‘s record in Europe is just one win in their last nine games under the Dutch manager. Surely Ten Hag will have to do something before things get worse and his time at the club comes to an end.

One step forward and two steps backwards for Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag’s Man United came into the new season on the back of winning the FA Cup, which was the second trophy in his second stint at the club that helped dismiss rumours of his sacking. With a new board and new signings this summer, there was a lot of optimism that the club was heading in the right direction.

Now just seven games into the season, familiar situations have started arising at the club. Fans are unhappy and pundits are criticizing the club’s performances once again.

The players were whistled at Old Trafford after the draw in the Europa League against Twente, indicating United are still in no way near their best. Erik ten Hag has yet to demonstrate the calibre needed to be the coach of a top Premier League side like United in his three years at the club.

Is Erik ten Hag’s time running out at United?

When a manager is at the club for three years, then there should be clarity in his playing style and how he has transformed that club. But so far under the Dutch manager, that has not been the case as United continue to labour in the games.

He has been rewarded with an abundance of resources and fresh recruits who have strengthened the midfield, offence, and defence during his third season at the club. However, United’s performance is still not better. Their 3-0 loss to Liverpool served as another reminder that, despite multiple additions to the squad, the Red Devils are far from rejuvenated.

There will be a point when fans and the club’s board will run out of patience and the board will eventually have to decide whether to keep the Dutchman on the team. Erik ten Hag doesn’t have much time left, so he needs to act quickly to establish the team’s reputation.
