Ivory Coast FIFA World Cup 2026

The Elephants kick off their World Cup campaign against Ecuador at Lincoln Financial Field tonight.

Ivory Coast will face Ecuador in a fiery Group E clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking their return to the quadrennial tournament after a 12-year absence. Drawn in a competitive group also containing Germany and Curacao, the three-time African champions will look to get a positive start tonight.

The Elephants suffered three consecutive group-stage exits before missing out on the 2018 and 2022 editions. They will look to progress to the knockouts for the first time in history in this yearโ€™s expanded 48-team tournament.

Emerse Faeโ€™s side have stitched together a four-match winning streak. However, they will face a tough test against their South American opponents, who are on a 19-match unbeaten run stretching back two years. It looks to be a fascinating battle, with the Ivorian attack set to face the resilient defence of Ecuador.

Letโ€™s look at the Ivory Coast confirmed lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Ecuador:

Ivory Coast (4-2-3-1): Yahia Fofana; Guela Doue, Wilfried Singo, Emmanuel Agbadou, Ghislain Konan; Seko Fofana, Franck Kessie; Yan Diomande, Bazoumana Toure, Nicolas Pepe; Elye Wahi.

Substitutes: Alban Lafont (gk), Mohamed Kone (gk), Christopher Operi, Evan Nโ€™Dicka, Odilon Kossounou, Ousmane Diomande, Amad Diallo, Chris Inao Oulai, Ibrahim Sangare, Jean Michael Seri, Ange-Yoan Bonny, Evann Guessand, Oumar Diakite, Parfait Guiagon, Simon Adingra.

Thoughts on the lineup

Evann Guessand has scored just four goals in 21 caps, while Ange-Yoan Bonny drew a blank on his international debut in June. As a result, the Ivorian head coach opted for the on-loan Rennes striker Elye Wahi, who has 10 goals to his name for the French side.

The Elephants have a lot of options in the wide areas. In-demand winger Yan Diomande starts on the right flank. However, Fae took a massive call in dropping Manchester United starlet Amad Diallo to the bench, with Hoffenheimโ€™s Bazoumana Toure starting in the number 10 role. On the wing, former Arsenal man Nicolas Pepe is preferred over Simon Adingra.

Franck Kessie and Seko Fofana are the starting midfield generals, shielding a backline that will be without the injured Evan Ndicka. With the Roma defender missing the opener due to a thigh injury, Wilfried Singo and Emmanuel Agbadou slot in at centre-back. Odilon Kossounou and Ousmane Diomande remain options off the bench.

Guela Doue, brother of Paris Saint-Germain maestro Desire Doue, starts at right-back, and Ghislain Konan starts at left-back. Yahia Fofana starts between the sticks as the regular number one.
