Both the Ivory Coast and Norway finished second in their respective groups.
While several of the Round of 32 fixtures appear relatively straightforward on paper in terms of predicting the likely winner, the clash between Norway and the Ivory Coast promises to be one of the most evenly matched contests of the round, with both sides boasting plenty of quality.
The encounter is scheduled to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, United States, on June 30. While the losing side will see their World Cup journey come to an end, the winners will book a place in the Round of 16, where either Japan or Brazil awaits.
Norway enjoyed an impressive group stage campaign, registering victories over Senegal and Iraq. Their only defeat came in a 4-1 loss to France in the final group game, although the result was largely expected as several key players were rested ahead of the knockout stages. They eventually finished second in the group with six points.
The Ivory Coast, meanwhile, also finished runners-up in Group E with six points, level with group winners Germany but behind on goal difference. They secured wins over Curacao and Ecuador while suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Germany. Although neither of their victories was particularly convincing, they did enough to progress to the knockout rounds.
Here are five key battles that could play a decisive role in determining the outcome when these two nations take the field in Dallas.
5. Sander Berge vs Nicolas Pepe

Sander Berge, who operates as the deepest midfielder in Norway’s midfield behind Martin Odegaard and Fredrik Aursnes, is set for a fascinating battle against Nicolas Pepe, who plays as a second striker behind either Elye Wahi or Yoan-Ange Bonny.
Berge is an experienced defensive midfielder who is technically sound and excels at progressing the ball from deep through his athleticism and line-breaking passes. However, he can struggle against agile players who thrive in one-on-one situations, an area where Pepe is particularly dangerous.
Pepe heads into this fixture after scoring a brace in the previous game and will be full of confidence. He is an excellent ball carrier and can drift into pockets of space, making him difficult to mark. Berge will need to make some well-timed tackles to limit his influence, given that he has occasionally struggled in positional terms against players with unpredictable movement.
4. Ibrahim Sangare vs Martin Odegaard
A fascinating midfield battle is expected between the two sides’ standout midfielders. Ibrahim Sangare is an athletic midfielder blessed with elite physicality and aerial dominance. He excels at making timely tackles to disrupt opposition attacks and halt quick transitions.
Odegaard, on the other hand, is a highly press-resistant midfielder with exceptional vision and a significant threat from set-pieces. His final passes have been outstanding throughout the tournament, and his partnership with Erling Haaland has been one of Norway’s biggest attacking weapons.
While Odegaard may find it difficult against a physically imposing midfielder like Sangare, the Ivorian can be sloppy in possession when pressed aggressively. That is an area where Odegaard’s intelligent pressing could prove highly effective.
3. Yan Diomande vs Julian Ryerson
Julian Ryerson, who picked up a knock during Norway’s second group game against Senegal, is expected to be fit for the knockout stages and faces a stern test against Yan Diomande. The two came up against each other in the Bundesliga this season, with Diomande getting the better of the contest.
Ryerson is a technically accomplished defender who is equally comfortable playing as a wing-back, thanks to his tremendous work rate. He is physically strong and can time his tackles well in tight situations, qualities that will be essential against Diomande, whose exceptional pace and trickery make him a nightmare in one-on-one situations.
Despite primarily operating as a winger, Diomande also has the ability to drift centrally and make decisive runs into the box, often popping up with crucial goals.
2. Amad Diallo vs David Moller Wolfe

Amad Diallo has emerged as one of the biggest attacking threats for the Ivory Coast after making a strong impact off the bench in their opening game. Operating from the right wing, he possesses exceptional close control and can wriggle past defenders with ease in tight spaces.
Amad creates plenty of opportunities and space through his combination plays with the full-backs and strikers, while also posing a goal threat by cutting inside onto his stronger foot.
He is expected to come up against David Moller Wolfe, a dynamic full-back known for his recovery pace and attacking contributions through overlapping runs. However, Wolfe has shown occasional defensive vulnerabilities, particularly in terms of positioning, and those weaknesses could be exposed by an inverted winger of Amad’s quality.
1. Erling Haaland vs Odilon Kossounou
Odilon Kossounou is a highly rated centre-back renowned for his aggressive tackling and proactive defensive approach, often stepping out from the back to win possession high up the pitch. He also possesses an outstanding recovery pace, a vital attribute when playing a high line and facing strikers of Erling Haaland’s calibre.
Although Kossounou is physically dominant, he has often been criticised for being vulnerable in aerial duels against powerful centre-forwards. That is one of Haaland’s greatest strengths, giving the Norwegian striker a slight advantage in what could prove to be the defining battle of the match.
