Japan will look to build on their impressive opening performance when they take on Tunisia in a crucial Group F encounter.
Japan return to action in Group F knowing that victory over Tunisia could place them in a strong position to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages. Hajime Moriyasu’s side produced an encouraging display in their opening fixture against the Netherlands. They recovered from difficult moments to secure a valuable 2-2 draw against one of the tournament favourites.
While Tunisia enter the match following a heavy defeat to Sweden and a managerial change that saw Hervé Renard take charge, Japan arrive with confidence and momentum. The Samurai Blue showcased their technical quality, tactical discipline and attacking fluidity against the Dutch. Another positive result would significantly strengthen their position ahead of the final group-stage match against Sweden.
Who all will be expected to be in the starting lineup?

Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki is expected to continue as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper after a composed performance against the Netherlands. The shot-stopper was frequently called into action during the opening fixture. Once again, he could play a key role against a Tunisia side expected to approach the game with greater urgency.
Japan are likely to continue with a three-man central defence featuring Hiroki Ito, Wataru Taniguchi and Yuta Watanabe. They are all expected to start. Taniguchi is likely to marshal the defensive line, bringing leadership and experience to the back three.
Yuta Watanabe offers composure in possession and the ability to step forward when opportunities arise. Meanwhile, Hiroki Ito’s versatility and defensive awareness provide additional balance. Yukinari Sugawara and Keito Nakamura are expected to operate as wing-backs.
Both players possess the energy required to contribute at both ends of the pitch. They will be crucial in stretching Tunisia’s defensive shape whenever Japan push forward.
Central midfield is most likely the area where Japan will look to establish control. Daichi Kamada is expected to play a deeper creative role, helping Japan progress the ball through midfield and link defence with attack.
Alongside him, Kaishu Sano brings mobility, defensive intensity and the ability to recover possession in dangerous areas. The pair will likely be tasked with dictating the tempo while ensuring Tunisia are unable to gain a foothold in central areas.
Japan’s front line combines movement, creativity and pace, making it one of the most difficult attacking units to contain. Ritsu Doan is expected to feature in an advanced role. He will look to use his technical ability and intelligent movement to create openings.
Daizen Maeda’s relentless pressing and speed provide a different dimension, allowing Japan to unsettle opponents both in and out of possession. Leading the attack is expected to be Ayase Ueda.
The striker remains Japan’s primary goal threat. He will look to build on the encouraging attacking display shown by the team in their opening match.
